Understanding User Needs to Drive Library Transformation
The Library of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has undertaken a study on user behaviour and library usage patterns as part of its continuous efforts to enhance service quality and chart the future direction of the library towards becoming a modern, user-centred knowledge hub.
The study was conducted to gain a deeper understanding of how students, academic staff, researchers, and administrative personnel utilise library resources, facilities, and services. In an era marked by rapid technological advancement and digital transformation, libraries are evolving beyond their traditional role as repositories of books to become dynamic learning environments that support teaching, learning, research, innovation, and collaboration.
Usage Trends and Digital Reliance
Findings from the study indicate that users increasingly rely on digital resources, including electronic journals, e-books, online databases, and institutional repositories, to support their academic and research activities. The growing demand for remote access to information reflects changing learning habits and the need for flexible, technology-driven library services that can be accessed anytime and anywhere.
In addition to digital resources, the study also highlighted the continued importance of physical library spaces. Users expressed a preference for comfortable, conducive, and technology-enabled learning environments that support individual study, group discussions, collaborative learning, and academic engagement.
User Engagement and Learning Support
The research further identified opportunities for strengthening information literacy programmes, research support services, and user engagement initiatives. Participants emphasised the importance of training sessions that enhance skills in information retrieval, database searching, reference management, academic writing, and research publication.
Such programmes play a crucial role in empowering users to navigate the ever-expanding information landscape effectively and responsibly.
Strategic Direction and Future Development
Based on the findings, the FPSK Library is committed to advancing its transformation agenda by embracing innovative technologies, expanding digital collections, improving user experience, and strengthening support for research and academic excellence.
Moving forward, the strategic direction of the FPSK Library will focus on key priorities including the integration of smart library technologies, enhancement of digital services, development of flexible learning spaces, and implementation of data-driven approaches to service improvement.
These initiatives align with the broader goals of Universiti Malaysia Sabah in promoting innovation, digitalisation, and excellence in higher education.
